Like Kerry Washington, Jennifer Lopez, Olivia Wilde, and many other celebrity moms, Blake Lively is not keen on the media obsession with the “post-baby body.” In a new interview with Sunrise, she talks about the “physical challenge” of starring in her shark movie The Shallows and filming it just eight months after having her now two-year-old daughter with Ryan Reynolds, James.
“I had to do a lot of endurance training,” she shares, before addressing the “post-baby” fascination,”It’s so unfair, it’s so celebrated: ‘This is what someone looks like after having a baby.’ And I think a woman’s body after having a baby is pretty amazing.”
Blake, currently pregnant with her second child, continues, “You don’t have to be Victoria’s Secret-ready right away. You’ve just done this incredible miracle that life has to offer. You gave birth to a human being. I would really like to see that celebrated.”
In a 2015 BBC interview, Blake had a similar sentiment: “I’m still 15 pounds heavier so it’s nice that people think I lost my baby weight … I still haven’t lost a pretty good chunk of it, but it’s also the pressure—who cares? There’s pressure to lose it, or women are supposed to look like they did when they were 19 right after you give birth to your child, I think it’s silly.”
Blake Lively only takes on movie parts which she deems worthy of uprooting her family for.
Blake Lively looks for diversity when it comes to selecting her acting roles.
The American actress may have made a name for herself as Serena van der Woodsen in teen drama TV series Gossip Girl, but has since ventured into more serious Hollywood films.
In her latest movie The Shallows she plays shark bait Nancy, who has to fight off a fearsome great white in the waters of Mexico. It’s a far cry from other recent roles, like Woody Allen’s ’30s set drama Cafe Society, a move that was deliberate on the 28-year-old’s part.
“I always look for diversity and I always look for movies that will scare me – ones that I feel are incredibly challenging,” she told M2woman magazine.
She adds that she’s had a “really cool year”, working with veteran director Woody as well as Marc Forster on upcoming Thriller All I See Is You.
A lot of the time Blake’s work takes her away from her family home, though it’s made easier when husband Ryan Reynolds and their young daughter James join her.
“(That’s what I look for) movies that I feel like I can’t not do, that’s really my barometer because I have such a wonderful family and person in my life that I think ‘OK, if I’m going to ask my family to come with me to the other side of the world it has to be something that I would really regret not doing’ and that’s how I decide what I’m going to fight for and what I’m not,” she smiled.
This coming December, it will have been four years since Gossip Girl’s run came to an end and our time spent with our preternaturally attractive Upper East Side pals was over. (By the way, four years has still not been enough time for us to fully process the reveal—spoiler alert, for those of you still working your way through the series on Netflix—that Dan was the conniving blogger of the show’s title.)
The CW series—like many a show geared toward a teenage audience—had an extremely passionate fan base at the time, and still elicits a surprising amount of enthusiasm from those who watched it (ask a table of current 28-year-olds at brunch in Murray Hill about Gossip Girl and prepare for some shrieks). It launched the careers of Blake Lively (Serena van der Woodsen) and Leighton Meester (Blair Waldorf), provided a slew of wonderful and “controversial” supporting characters (Taylor Momsen’s petulant Jenny Humphrey, Jessica Szhor’s “free-spirited” Vanessa Abrams, Michelle Trachtenberg’s mastermind Georgina Sparks), and provided enough glam outfits and fast-paced intrigue to fuel lunchtime conversations for the entire week (wild to think there was no Snapchat or Instagram back in Gossip Girl’s first seasons—we all had to talk to each other during lunch).
Anyway, as with any show that has a cult following of sorts, there are rumblings, time and again, of a possible reboot or reunion with the cast, and during a recent sit-down with E! News about the The Shallows (as we all know, the only movie that mattered this summer), Lively was asked about a potential reunion of the cast.
“I don’t know, it would be fun,” Lively said. “We had such a great time doing that that I think we all would really enjoy that.”
Considering the cast doesn’t really seem to stay in touch (with the exception of Chace Crawford, Ed Westwick, and Szhor, who do appear in pictures with each other from time to time), this is perhaps a slightly more hopeful answer from Lively than we might have expected. She even added, when told that the interviewer misses the show, “That’s nice to hear. I miss it sometimes, too.” (It is possible to imagine, late one night, after James is asleep, and as Ryan Reynolds watches YouTube videos in the other room, Lively scrolling back in her phone to a picture of her and Meester, sitting on Blair’s bed between takes, hair up in curlers, expressions of pure wonder on their faces, giddy at the possibility of where the show might take them.)
Asked by the interviewer where her character, Serena, might be that night, Lively theorized, “She’s probably on vacation. She’s probably living in Europe, doing something fabulous. She hasn’t been in touch.” If Lively got on Snapchat, though, she would know that Serena is splitting time between Mykonos and London. She has launched four handbag lines (don’t ask her what they’re called, though, she always gets the names “mixed up”). She’s dating an art dealer who’s 43 years old, though there’s also a 26-year-old shipping heir in the picture. And once, Blair visited London and they got tea and it was actually sort of nice. “We should really do this more often,” Serena said, after they hugged, about to part ways, and even though they both knew they wouldn’t—Waldorf was about to fly back to New York, anyway—it was nice, for both of them, to think they might.
Yesterday Blake attended the newest kids’ brand Target Cat & Jack launch celebration at Brooklyn Bridge Park in New York! After posing for photos, Blake snapped selfies with fans and even knelt down on the ground to chat with a handful of adorable little girls. The soiree also brought out fellow famous moms Camila Alves, Jenna Dewan Tatum, and Rachel Bilson We added high quality pictures of this event to our gallery, so go check it out.
Set in the 1930s, Woody Allen’s bittersweet romance CAFÉ SOCIETY follows Bronx-born Bobby Dorfman (Jesse Eisenberg) to Hollywood, where he falls in love, and back to New York, where he is swept up in the vibrant world of high society nightclub life.
Centering on events in the lives of Bobby’s colourful Bronx family, the film is a glittering valentine to the movie stars, socialites, playboys, debutantes, politicians, and gangsters who epitomised the excitement and glamour of the age.
Poignant, and often hilarious, CAFÉ SOCIETY, a film with a novel’s sweep, takes us on a journey from pastel-clad dealmakers in plush Hollywood mansions, to the quarrels and tribulations of a humble Bronx family, to the rough-and-tumble violence of New York gangsters, to the sparkling surfaces and secret scandals of Manhattan high life.
With CAFÉ SOCIETY, Woody Allen conjures up a 1930s world that has passed to tell a deeply romantic tale of dreams that never die.
Starring Jeannie Berlin, Steve Carell, Jesse Eisenberg, Blake Lively, Parker Posey, Kristen Stewart, Corey Stoll and Ken Stott, Café Society opens in UK cinemas September 2nd.
